1 out of 5 stars Incompetent   September 1, 2009

The depths of incompetence to which this book sinks may be illustrated by an example from page 7, where Newton and Locke are referred to as "19-century writers" (sic). The sentence reads:

"The postpositivist tradition comes from 19-century writers, such as Comte, Mill, Durkheim, Newton and Locke (Smith, 1983)"

Let us follow the reference to see that the blame falls squarely on Creswell.

Smith mentions Newton and Locke exactly once. He does so in his discussion of "a group of theorists often labeled positivists, which included among others Comte, Mill, and Durkheim. This group was working within an overall empiricist tradition as established by Newton, Locke, and others." (p. 6 of Smith's article).

Smith of course assumes that the reader has some modicum of familiarity with Newton and Locke, these two seminal figures in the history of Western thought, but apparently Creswell does not, misdating them by two centuries. Furthermore, Smith makes it perfectly clear that Comte, Mill, and Durkheim were of course positivist and not "postpositivists" as Creswell has it.

Ask yourself if you want to learn how to do research from someone who does not know even the most rudimentary elements of intellectual history, and who manages to mutilate a crystal clear and correct passage into farce of errors and ignorance.

5 out of 5 stars Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches   August 12, 2009

Creswell does a masterful job of not only describing the three approaches to research study design, but gives ample examples, pros and cons, and all the details a beginning scholarly researcher needs to know. The book is organized well and things seem to be in the right place everytime you need to find something. The index could be a bit more detailed, but on only one occasion did I need to raw-search for something I couldn't find in the index. The writing level is so easy to understand and it was intentionally written to be a help to the novice rather than a masterpiece for the critics. It is a "keeper" and I would imagine there are not very many "used" copies for sale.

A well researched, written, pertinent guide to any research project. I bought this book for a class, and will be keeping it for personal reference.
