5 out of 5 stars beautiful truth   December 3, 2006

Trapped in the Mirror is the most beautiful "self-help" book I've ever read. It is free of simplistic lists and bulleted items, subheads, and the other more typical components of the genre. It provides no pat answers, allowing life's complexity to be what it is. My favorite parts are the final chapters that move on to empowering individuals to become real.br /What makes this book so valuable is that Elan Golomb "sees" my experience, confirms my truth, and speaks in many ways of how I might, first, recognize the ways I have already managed to creatively survive, and then, how I may become more authentic, more able to exist and feel a part of the world.br /I like the way Trapped in the Mirror describes the experience of growing up with a narcissistic parent so thoroughly and so poetically. I like Golomb's acknowledgement of the importance of those animals, objects and people in the periphery who mean so much, because they see you as you are, even if only briefly. They show that there is a way to live that is warmer and more alive. I like her belief that creativity can stand in for relationship, if one is so wounded that relating is impossible. One's creativity may lead the way to relationship by finding ways around the injunctions of the narcissistic parent.br /If you have ever felt like you don't exist and aren't real, read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful   October 2, 2006

Ignore the fussy Library Journal review up there and get this book if you have any suspicion that you were raised by a narcissist. I'm just starting the process of coming to terms with my childhood and this book has been a tremendous help. Dr. Golomb collects a diverse range of case studies, insightfully explains the psychological processes at work in each one, and then finally brings the lessons of all the cases together to offer practical advice on recovery. If you've been dogged by the cruelty and rejection of a narcissistic parent all your life, this book is a great way to begin the process of moving out from under that shadow.

This is a "GREAT BOOK" if your ready to learn how your life has been effected by your childhood. Very moving and can be pain full in some parts. A must read if your ready to understand the why and the what. br /Dana

5 out of 5 stars A good book not just about narcissists, but about manipulative people!   May 26, 2006

This book was great. It flowed well, with a lot of real life stories. The explanation and solutions were well tied into those stories. br /br /It's not just for children of narcissists. It helps you identify psychopathic/narcissistic behavior in relationships in general. Once you know the game that some people play, you can defend yourself while interacting with them!

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible book!!   May 7, 2006
This book was recommended to me by a councilor, and I didn't understand exactly why at the time. While I read through this book, I was absolutely shocked that the people in the book and their situations were just like my family!! I never would have thought of that in a millions years seeing as how my perception of what a narcissist is, is completely different to the reality. All my life I thought something was wrong with me could never quite figure out what it was. For the first time, I now know exactly why I am the way I am, and have some ideas of how to go about changing and improving myself to be who and what I want to be. This book was freeing in so many ways, I can never thank the author enough for writing this book!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone, as they will probably either see themselves, or someone they know!
