Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
In all Mildred D. Taylor's unforgettable novels she recounts "not only the joy of growing up in a large and supportive family, but my own feelings of being faced with segregation and bigotry." Her Newbery Medal-winning IRoll of Thunder, Hear My Cry/I tells the story of one African American family, fighting to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s. Nine-year-old Cassie Logan, growing up protected by her loving family, has never had reason to suspect that any white person could consider her inferior or wish her harm. But during the course of one devastating year when her community begins to be ripped apart by angry night riders threatening African Americans, she and her three brothers come to understand why the land they own means so much to their Papa. "Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain't never had to live on nobody's place but your own and long as I live and the family survives, you'll never have to. That's important. You may not understand that now but one day you will. Then you'll see."p Twenty-five years after it was first published, this special anniversary edition of the classic strikes as deep and powerful a note as ever. Taylor's vivid portrayal of ugly racism and the poignancy of Cassie's bewilderment and gradual toughening against social injustice and the men and women who perpetuate it, will remain with readers forever. Two award-winning sequels, ILet the Circle Be Unbroken/I and IThe Road to Memphis/I, and a long-awaited prequel, IThe Land/I, continue the profoundly moving tale of the Logan family. (Ages 9 and older) I--Emilie Coulter/I

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Child.   December 2, 2008
This book was recommended by my child's fifth grade teacher. It was their November book of the month to read for the class. It was a stretch with the slang talk of the south but it was understandable. It was an eye opener to the children as to how things were in the 1930's. Very good book and I would recommend this book to any fifth grade class for group reading and discussion.

5 out of 5 stars my son liked this book   November 12, 2008
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Teacher Guide)br /br /My son had to read this book for school. It has captured his attention. It is a good book for over 10 year old to help understand prejudice. It has shown him the injustices in the world which he faces on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry   October 6, 2008
I have taught for 17 years, the last six years at the middle school level. Roll of Thunder is one of my favorite books to teach, and it becomes my students' favorite book by the end. Infact, I would say, several students go on to read the sequals. The audio version is well done and interesting to listen to as well. This is one of the best books I know of to teach tolerence and peaceful ways to protest when you are wronged.

5 out of 5 stars Black after the civil war   September 11, 2008
This book portrays the vivid reality of ugly racism after the civil war. A great book and one worth your time and mine. A past of social injustice that we do not want to go back too, nor become the men or women who caused it. br /Anna del C.br /Author of "The Elf and the Princess"br /and "Trouble in the Elf City"br /The Elf and The Princess: The Silent Warrior Trilogy - Book One (The Silent Warrior Trilogy)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source to learn African American history in the 1930s   July 17, 2008
This is a great book! It is well written and the story line is very easy to follow. This book was one of three books that was required summer reading for my daughter's 6th grade class and she loved it as well. It gave her a different perspective on the different and most often times unfair treatment African American received during the 1930s. I strongly recommend this book to every young person to learn a few of life's lessons.
