To save time, format your references automatically by selecting a predefined style guide, including APA, MLA, The Chicago Manual of Style, and others. There's even a Contextual Spelling Checker that helps you avoid common mistakes and misuse of similarly spelled words.

    Editing and Reviewing Tools
Word 2007 provides editing and reviewing tools that help you create professional documents faster than ever before. Live visual previews, predefined style galleries, table formats, and other options are always at your fingertips. To help minimize time wasted re-typing, take advantage of new Building Blocks designed specifically for the addition of frequently used content to your documents. You can even create your own Building Blocks to simplify the addition of custom text, such as legal disclaimer text or other frequently used materials. For that professional touch, select from a predefined gallery of cover pages, pull quotes, headers, and footers.

    High-Impact Graphics
Word 2007 helps you communicate more effectively with high-impact graphics. New charting and diagramming features that include 3-D shapes, transparency, drop shadows, and other effects help you create professional-looking graphics that result in more effective documents. Quickly apply a new look and feel to your documents using Quick Styles and Document Themes to change the appearance of text, tables, and graphics throughout your entire document to match your preferred style or color scheme.

Share Your Documents and Content Confidently
With Word 2007, you can share documents with colleagues to gather feedback efficiently. You can also help prevent unwanted distribution of your documents and even remove private comments or hidden text prior to publishing. Additionally, the tri-pane review panel makes it easy to compare and combine two versions of a Word document, so you can detect even the smallest differences when dealing with changes from reviewers.

Participate in Office SharePoint Server 2007
To help make users more efficient when working in a managed environment, participate in Office SharePoint Server 2007 workflows without leaving Word. You can start workflows, interact with workflow tasks, or get information about your documents from the new Document Alert Bar. Managed document repositories can also be accessed from within Word 2007, so you have greater control over document versions. For added peace of mind, information management policies consistently enforce the labeling, auditing, and expiration of documents stored in SharePoint Server 2007 managed document repositories. You can also choose to keep track of your documents with the Document Information Panel which can help add workflow and tracking information directly to your documents. And Word 2007 uses a separate file format (.docm) for macro-enabled documents, so you can quickly tell whether a file is capable of executing any embedded macros.

Keep Your Documents Safe and Secure
Word 2007 offers the Document Inspector feature to help you detect and remove unwanted comments, personally identifiable information, hidden text, or other information from documents so that private information stays that way. You can also add digital signatures to help others verify that content has not been changed since it was published. Another option is to add a new signature line to prompt other Word users for their signature, or to provide a visible digital signature within your documents. Additionally, the Reading Mode offers you an immersive, full-screen reading experience that makes online reading easier, reducing the need to print the document. And because quality editing depends on the ease of viewing text, new navigation controls and typography display improvements make the reading experience better than ever.

    Convert Your Word Documents
With Word 2007, you can share documents in Portable Document Format file (PDF) and XML Paper Specification (XPS) format without using third-party tools. XML support facilitates smaller, more robust documents and deep integration with information systems and external data sources. Because Office Open XML Formats are compressed, segmented file formats, they offer a dramatic reduction in file size and help ensure damaged or corrupt files can be easily recovered.

    Facilitate Important Business Processes
Word 2007 offers a host of integration points to enable organizations to build powerful solutions that are easy for users to utilize successfully. XML Formats give developers unprecedented access to the contents of your documents, enabling broad interoperability with a wide range of programs and solutions. The Document Information Panel means users enter correct metadata by making it possible for you link document properties to Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services or to other external data sources. Content Controls help you structure the document authoring process by requiring specific types of information or by adding sections of documents that may not be edited or reformatted.

    Tools For Developers
Custom-defined schema support of the Office XML Formats enables developers to host their own content within Word documents, using their own custom XML vocabularies. Instead of expensive translations, custom XML content is hosted directly within the file. You can also take advantage of Data Bindings and provide developers with an easy way to link the contents of external data sources and custom-defined schemas to their word documents.

4 out of 5 stars Great for this shortcut junkie   September 29, 2009
    A. Reyes
Imagine interacting with the newest version of your (least?) favorite tool and being disappointed in drastic changes in the layout, key functionality, and behavior. I can see and understand the frustrations users are experiencing with the new version of Word. However, I'll offer a review from the perspective of a heavy shortcut user. If you know the shortcut keys in 2003 (accelerator keys) you may find the new interface use-able and actually helpful. This long-time user still relies on shortcuts, likes the new interface when it's needed, and has some tips for reluctant upgraders.

As a long-time Word user, the first time I started the 2007 version I saw the new ribbon, scrolled through the tabs, and then proceeded to write using the shortcuts I'm used to without much grief.

I use the 2003 shortcuts for everything from cut & paste to fonts, styling, save, print, copy & paste styling, insert, captions, footnotes, headers and footers, and bullets and numbering. Word 2007 preserves a large number of these so you can enter them without interacting with the dreaded ribbon.

If I don't know the shortcut it usually means I'm not familiar with the option. At this point I'm as much a novice as a new word processor user; the interface helps as it feels Web 2.0-inspired [the interface, not the social part of Web 2.0] (haha, imagine a desktop application copying the Web that was trying to copy desktop apps). Similar options are grouped together, I can quickly scroll through the tabs, and the layout is fairly consistent between installations (between home and work, for example).

    Pros
    * Allows 2003 shortcuts, awesome
    * Re-organized tab for the things I didn't know about
    * Templates carried over
    * Change style sets (maximum change, least amount of effort)
    * Less flexibility as a good thing: I'm not compelled to get the user interface (UI) just right between work and home.
    * I can add shortcuts to the quick access toolbar (top left near the office button)

    Cons
    * I'm not used to the quick part document properties (how do I change the style and where are these fields set?)
    * UI changes (not so bad since I use shortcuts, but see other reviews on Amazon)
    * Irritating "page break has styling" bug lives on (sometimes a Header 1 styling will exist on a manual page break)

While the 2007 version doesn't adversely affect shortcut junkies, other reviews will show the frustrations of breaking an old design. I won't say that everyone will like it. But if you're forced to update (e.g. at work), here are some tips.

Tip 1: One of my coworkers hated it, but found it easier_to-use after discovering the quick launch tool bar to save favorite commands.

Tip 2: There is an interactive tool to help learn the new tools by clicking on the old ones. If you know how to find a feature in Word 2003, click on it to get both an explanation and visual demo of how to find it in the new version. [...]

Tip 3: If you find yourself needing to work with users still using Word 2003, the Office button > options > save section lets you default to the previous version. I'm not sure, though, why they didn't call .docx the "Word Document 2007" format (instead of just "Word Document"). Could it really be the last format version?

The tips might help those stuck with a Word 2007 upgrade. I like the new interface because I love shortcuts (and they still work). You *might* like the new version if you're a shortcut junkie too.

    About me:
I'm an office worker and a student (again) with a decade experience with Word (back to 97 version). I currently write research reports, memos, and internal software documentation and training materials. I do some programming, but a good part of my background with Word and Office comes from making quick and easy fliers, brochures, and paper forms for a dance studio as well as legal and other documents in an executive suite setting.

    5 out of 5 stars word 2007 review   August 25, 2009

    1 out of 5 stars A suprisingly epic failure   June 8, 2009

Like Vista, Word 2007's beauty is only skin deep, but its ugly goes clear to the bone. It is mind-numbingly difficult to learn and use. Styles do not keep the formats you specify, numbered lists do not maintain their numbering or formats, and tables are a bear. The "Ribbon" is a shiny, brand-spanking-new toy that is the single most unusable piece of UI design I have ever come across (and I've evaluated alpha versions of shareware).

Examples: To see what style is applied to a current paragraph, you have to have the style list open, then scroll through the pages-long list to see which style has a little blue rectangle around it. Also, style names sometimes disappear or are inexplicably unavailable. To position a graphic exactly on the page, you must right-click on it, select "Text Wrapping" (HUH?!?), then "More Layout Options." A graphical icon inserted in front of a line of text disappears when you re-apply the paragraph style. To copy or paste something using the Ribbon, you must first select the Home Ribbon, then click Paste.

I've designed GUIs before. I'm not fantastic, and I only aspire to be "good." But this UI, friends, breaks so many standard guidelines for intuitive UI design, I question whether Human Factors professionals were involved at all. At least, if they were, they should hang their head in shame as they're ushered out the corporate offices after being fired in disgrace. No UI designer involved with this development should ever include Word 2007 on their resume--it would black list them for life. This feels like a poorly designed alpha version of a brand-new product in development, not a refinement of an established, well-accepted standard. Some exec in the UI group must have had this "Ribbon" idea and jammed it down the throats of his/her minions, making the "stellar results" of their "usability testing" a foregone conclusion. There is NO WAY this new UI was tested favorably. NO. WAY.

Not only does this emperor have no clothes, but he's covered in boils and pustules underneath. Microsoft needs to put a stake in its heart, declare a MEA CULPA and get back on track.

    This is just abysmal.

I have used Word for years and then three months ago I upgraded to the 2007 Version. There is only one word for it, AWFUL! I have spent aa much as an hour looking for an old, common command. I would recommend you not purchase it if you are a seasoned Word user. If you're new to it, perhaps, it will make sense!

After buying a new computer, I have used Microsoft word for 2 months. To me it's like buying a sports car to go down the store to buy a loaf of bread. I had Word 2003 and it worked fine for me, no complaints. In my opinion, Word 2007 is an over kill for the majority of users. To use the car analogy again, it's like Toyota telling you need to buy a new car every 3 years although your existing car works fine...They also tell you you need to purchase it with all the options...I guess that's how you become the richest man on the planet, force people to buy something they don't need or want...
