5 out of 5 stars Princeton Review's the only way to go for testing   August 7, 2010
Marzipan
I used the Princeton Review for my AP History and AP English tests in high school, when my history teacher highly recommended it. I got a 5 (out of 5) on the History test, and a 4 on the English test, which was a really big accomplishment considering the teacher was incompetent, so the only things I really learned for the test was from the Princeton Review study book.
I haven't taken my GRE yet, but the PR GRE book appears to be at the same high standards of the previous two I've used. Excellent test taking tips and strategies, which are really useful for people prone to test anxiety like myself. I am confident that I'll score well with the help of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Useful only for low performers   July 30, 2010

The math review is somewhat rudimentary, especially considering that the new GRE math questions have become more difficult, but the divisibility properties were very useful and you can't find them in most other books.

Advice in the book is often repeated without end (e.g., "check it out on the CD") and presented all over the place. Ironically the most repeated advice "Always write A, B, C, D, E" on your scratch paper is ill-advised, as one is not allowed to do this during the untimed sections of the test. Not only that, but if you were to write the letters down on scratch paper, you a) lose valuable time, and b) not gain much utility from it - after all, you should be able to keep three cancellations in your short-term memory.

A significant proportion of content in the book doesn't add any value and just seems to be filler text.

After all this criticism, I will way that the book is edited well, compared to some other preparation material out there, and, that the book is good for people who usually perform in the 15th-45th percentile range.

I just took the GRE and got good scores- this book was a huge help. It breaks down how the test works and has good tips. I used it in conjunction with other books; I don't think it would have sufficed on its own. It clearly explained everything and gave me a better understanding how the GRE really works. My only complaint was that there was a section for new sentence completion questions- those questions are not yet on the test so I wish I had not spent the time studying for them. They DID show up on the experimental test at the end, so I assume they will be appearing on the actual test at some point.
I would recommend using this book along with the official ETS book and maybe one or two others. No other book replicates the GRE test questions exactly, which is why you need the ETS book. It's the only one with real, retired tests. All the others might have practice tests, but they are not actual GRE questions- just similar. However, real GRE questions are hard to accurately replicate!
All the math in this book is useful, as is the vocab. The section on analytical writing is also quite helpful. But like I said, use it in conjunction with other books. I don't think there is one, single GRE book that can fully prepare you on its own. I used this, GRE For Dummies (also very good) and the ETS book- an absolute necessity! I also had Barron's Essential Words for the GRE- another good one. I got flash cards but didn't find them too helpful- some people love them though. I also got a CD Rom, which had no new info, but it is extremely helpful to study on a computer if you're taking the computer-based exam. It just gets you used to the format.

1 out of 5 stars RIPOFF   July 17, 2010

Buy this if you want to throw away money. I bought this purely for the CAT test online offering. Apparently, Princeton Review are not honoring their claim of 4 full length practice tests or other online tools. Entering the text serial number @ [...]
/cracking (per instruction) produces a "Cannot Display Page" error.

Entering the ISBN (alternatively) produces a No Offer Found page from PR.

Emailing tech support produces a bounced email response.

I've tried IE, Mozilla, and Chrome browsers.

For me, the online tools were the entire point of purchasing this text. I purchased 2010 edition - no joy. Figured they were focusing on 2011 edition... same results. Disgruntled? Yes. Rarely I have encountered such boldly fraudulent product claims.

If you like tossing away your money... enjoy. [Amazon, I hope you're taking note.]

5 out of 5 stars Cracking the GRE -- 2011 Edition   July 13, 2010

In this review, I am writing to prospect customers who have either scored poorly in previous attempts of taking the GRE or customers who are about to take the exam for the first time. In my opinion, "Cracking the GRE, 2011 Edition," is money well spent and for the following reasons:

(1) the outline of instructions in the book, DVD, and Online are well organized and consistent as a whole to motivate and encourage students to focus and perform well;
(2) the "behind the scenes" philosophy for which the GRE is designed is priceless;
(3) the drills in each academic section are vital to mastering the subject concepts and speed in preparation for the real-time exam.
Therefore, seeing, hearing, and doing the work simultaneously through recurrent drills allow students to master the material before the exam. This is important because mastery elevates self-confidence and self-efficacy to accomplish the goal of achieving a high score and acceptance into the desired graduate masters or doctoral program.

Reduce your stress and enjoy the outcome of learning! :o)
