1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money   September 19, 2005

This book is a glorified version of everyday common sense. It is full of "insightful" tips like 'Check your child's backpack and schoolwork each night' and 'A child who has a fever, upset stomach, flu or severe cold or cough should be kept home from school.' Gee, why didn't I think of that! If you need a book to tell you these and other "insider" tips then you need more help than this book could possibly give you! I bought this book because I was looking for homework and test taking tips for my second grader. I was very disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A handy, quick reference guide, but parents must go for more serious books!   September 6, 2005

As a compact, handy, quick reference guide, this book certainly meets the intents purposes of the authors, who are teachers, but who also happen to be parents themselves.br /br /The coverage is pretty broad-based, as readers can see from the chapter layout, as follows:br /br /-Back to School Tips;br /-Home-School Communication;br /-Routines to live by;br /-Health Safety;br /-Homework Tests;br /-Talents Learning Styles;br /-Setting Goals;br /-Enrichment;br /-Personal Responsibility;br /-Getting along with Others;br /-Volunteering;br /-Holidays Breaks;br /br /The practical insider tips are written in short bursts to the many questions parents would often want to ask about their children's school experiences. In this respect, the authors have done quite a good job.br /br /However, parenting is a very serious affair. It is an accepted fact that parents are their children's first teachers their homes are their children's first classrooms. The insider tips from this book alone cannot solve your parenting problems or issues. You have to read more seriously written books. Some of the books listed as further reading resources under FYI in this particular book are worth exploring.br /br /As a matter of fact, the publisher of this particular book, Free Spirit Publishing (website: www.freespirit.com), happens to have excellent books for the serious parent/reader. I would recommend a few:br /br /- What Young Children Need to Succeed, by Jolene Roehkepartain;br /- Playing Smart, by Susan Perry;br /- How to Help Your Child with Homework, by Jeanne Shay Schumm;br /br /Once you have peruse these serious books, then the insider tips from this particular book will become more useful meaningful.br /br /For the purpose of scoring, I would rate this book a 4.br /br /

5 out of 5 stars Most helpful book I've ever read   February 29, 2000

I heard about this book from a friend and bought it the first chance I had. School-Saavy has changed the way I raise my children. I no longer worry about being left out of my children's school life. This book taught me to catch my children's school problems before they start. Since I read School-Saavy my kids are getting spectacular grades because I know how to help them. Thanks Saavy authors!

5 out of 5 stars School-Savvy is not just for August and September   November 24, 1999

What a wonderful treasure I uncovered when I read The School-Savvy Parent! This is not a book to be used just in August and September. You'll use this book all year. There are tips that have helped me make mornings less stressful, ease the homework anxiety, and for holiday savvy parenting. There are even examples of conversation starters that actually get my child talking about school. The School-Savvy Parent is indexed and so it's easy to use when I want to look up something specific. I take it with me while I'm waiting for soccer practice to end and enjoy snappy, humorous tips that help me help my child. No parent bashing here.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL PARENTS OF SCHOOL-AGE CHILDRE   September 25, 1999

I picked this book up at the bookstore after reading about it in the Courier Journal Newspaper. It is just what I needed. I have been trying to do just one tip a day from the book and it seems to be helping me help my children be more successful. I feel like I am more in the know about school. I would highly recommend this book to parents.
