5 out of 5 stars if your looking for a fingerpoint book this wont be for you   December 27, 2008

this book has been very painful to read. tears streaming down my face i had to confront my own heart issues and my own comfort level. for the first time i saw parenting through the eyes of God and this book will show you yourself in a new light. before using the principles on my children, i have to use them on me. what a blessing. reading this book is so convicting. while reading i felt the rivers of living waters flow from this book. what biblical and godly advice! no matter how much this hits home, i know the Spirit of God has moved this mans heart to write this and open eyes. it will bring you back to the cross and ask for mercy. i thank God for the courage of Tedd to write this book. may He bless him!!! a must read for every christian parent that means real business. not for a quick fix! but a constant growing to become more like Christ. it makes you realize that truly without God this is an impossible task.

I read the book cover to cover (just in case others who disagree with my review assume that I only skimmed the book). There are great points to glean from this book but overall it was time wasted. br /br /Pros: br /*Author is likely a fabulous parent br /*His last few chapters regarding teens was very good advice about really talking to and connecting with your childbr /*Brings attention to being intentional with children and how we help connect our children with the Bible and God. (In many ways...not all)br /*Discusses what the parent's heart should look like when discilpining a child. br /br /Cons:br /*Author labels grounding, time out, and behavior modification as ungodly methods. (what would you call 40 years wondering in the desert, God used time out.)br /*Author labels salvation for children and family worship time as ungodly goals.br /*I disagree with the method of spanking the author outlines. I think it is degrading and cruel to pull a child's pants down to spank (especially if the child may have been physically or sexually abused in the past).br /br /Honestly my biggest issue with this book is that the author takes things that he simply disagrees with and labels them as ungodly. I have a huge problem with that. Bringing your child to a place of salvation is not an ungodly goal. The mistake would be to stop there and not teach the child anything after that (this is the idea put forth by the author and I agree with him but to label the thing ungodly is....ungodly)

1 out of 5 stars sick sad: promotes child abuse   December 16, 2008

i don't understand the adoration of this book! while it does address that obedience is not the primary issue (as so many other books do), and focuses on the need to focus on the heart of your child, it misses the mark in a huge way. from endorsing the beating of infants, to a warped view of children in general, from weird theology regarding the role of parents, to the utterly bizarre abusive bare bottom spankings that a small child is to endure without anger or upset, this book is a manual for child abuse and little more. i'm shocked this book is not only sold all over the place, but is given by church leaders to parents upon the births of their children! our children should be given the same respect and mercy that we give to other believers, should be won through love and patience and kindness, not through bullying and beatings.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Useful   November 29, 2008

Like any other child rearing book written by fallible humans, there were some useful things I learned from this book and other things I disagree with. No matter what his credentials, what worked so wonderfully with his children may not work for mine. He is not me and his children are wired differently than mine.br / On a positive note, I did really feel that Mr. Tripp is right on saying that parents need to get to the 'heart' of the matter and address the motive underlying behaviors. I agree that while a child may look well behaved on the outside, they may be seething with other issues on the inside. I also did agree with his emphasis on maintaining communication and really listening to kids.br / I also was convicted of not disciplining in anger or impulse, which I think happens more than most of us would like.br / However, his absolutism with corporal punishment was a bit troubling. I am not anti spanking necessarily but I truly believe that different children respond to it in different ways. My son, who is of a more laid back temperament, has been swatted on the bottom on a couple of occasions and quickly shaped up and got the idea and we haven't had to do it since. My daughter, who is highly sensitive and high strung, flies into an unbelievable rage and five star meltdown when we tried the same method on her. Spanking escalates and intensifies what was initially a minor childish disobediance and the whole resultant aftermath is scary and frightening for all of us! We have changed discipline tactics with her because I don't believe we are helping her any and are building resentment when what I want to do is to tie the heart strings instead of blow them apart!br / Also, Mr. Tripp is a pastor with a strong arsenal of scripture to use for rebuking, encouraging etc. with his children. I am afraid that I am a new Christian without a strong knowledge of the Bible. I felt overwhelmed and inadequate on how I would ever be able to shepherd anyone without first researching what scriptures to use! This made is impractical and disheartening for me to see how to actually apply the addressing of the heart issues.-------br /

Someone gave us this book about 10 years ago when our son was having some major behavior problems. After reading this book I came to realize that the problems were heart problems and needed to be dealt with. This book was a tool used to help change our lives as a family. We started to see a dramatic change in our son after several months, and things have been much better since then. My son is now 16. My son loves the Lord and has a desire to serve Him. His heart is yealded to God, which gives me much peace knowing that he is now much more accountable to God than to me. I highly recommend this book to all parents. It takes time and consistency, but it is worth the results!
