To be clear: America hasn't flooded the market with another best-of album. Instead, two of the founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, were rescued from classic rock purgatory by the Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger with an offer from the younger musicians to act as producers on an album of new material. The respect that Iha and Schlesinger have shown for America's talents is touching, drawing the best out of the band's close harmonies and gentle folk rock sound. Over the decades, Beckley and Bunnell have lost none of their vocal compatibility or their guitar acumen. If anything, they're much better players in 2007 than they were when they first rode into pop music history on their "Horse with No Name." iHere Now/i is further enhanced by guests like Ryan Adams (on "Ride On"), as well as Ben Kweller pairing up with My Morning Jacket members Jim James and Patrick Hallahan for a cover of Jacket's "Golden." Meanwhile, Nada Surf members play back up on a heart-stopping version of their own "Always Love." Also included is a live disc recorded in 2005, which finds America covering their chart-topping hits with a deft, subtle hand, reminding us that this group could hold its own with Crosby, Stills, Nash Young, the Eagles, and other early '70s contemporaries. i--Jaan Uhelszki/i

5 out of 5 stars Here and Now   August 26, 2008
One of the most impressive of all America albums to date (and we're talking ... 36+years, folks!). The music is so pure, sweet and subtle it will melt your heart.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite the original America sound.   April 7, 2008

I bought this cd because my original cd had quite a few scratches on it and I am not sure how much longer it will last. I really didn't like this cd. True it has alot of their great hits on it but it is a much slower cd. I prefer the original more upbeat version. It is not near as good when they sing the songs slower.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the future   November 7, 2007

Wow, what a surprise! I bought the double disc CD for the live oldies as we are considering booking America for an event next year and wanted to hear how they sounded, and have found myself listening to the new stuff every day driving to work. 3 or 4 of the songs - Chasing the Rainbow, All is Love, One Chance - are great songs that should be getting airplay but sadly I haven't heard any. Buy it and listen! Now if I can just convince my boss to book 'em!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good guys...   October 31, 2007

Too bad this won't get the radio airplay it deserves (maybe they don't care about that at this point anyway). I've been listening to "Here and Now" for a number of days now whilst driving in my car. Definitely growing on me. I like a lot of different kinds of music; America is sort of out of left field. But that's a good thing. Nobody like them. I am truly pleasantly surprised how much I like this disc. The production is excellent. Not sure how much the guests figured into making the production sound so good. Whatever they all did it gets an "A" for sound quality, musicianship and songwriting. A good batch o' new tunes there fella's. Keep on rockin'! br /

4 out of 5 stars New Disc is Good   October 4, 2007

The new CD is good, though it sounds like all of their other stuff, I didn't notice the influence from the younger folks. The second disk - the live session is awful; throw it way use it as a coaster.
