This low-key 1993 live retrospective marked something of a return to form for Rod the Mod, who for many years had more or less abdicated his position as a performer of consequence to pursue a more frivolous pop-star persona. With his former Faces bandmate Ron Wood in tow, Stewart revisits hits like "Hot Legs," "Tonight's the Night," and "Maggie May"--and more adventurous choices like Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" and Tom Waits's "Tom Traubert's Blues"--with an effortless grace and a renewed expressiveness that makes IUnplugged ... And Seated/I a consistent pleasure. I--Scott Schinder/I

4 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart Classics on Acoustic   March 10, 2008
If you like Rod Stewart's "solo" material, then this is a good live recording of his hits with everyone playing acoustic instruments. Get out your acoustic guitar and play along!

5 out of 5 stars A Seer's Plug for "Unplugged...and Seated"   February 28, 2008
Some time ago, oh, I would say 13 or 14 years ago, my beautiful guide Marshy came to visit me. She brought with her some newspaper clipping she wanted me to see. "Look Metamorpho, it's a contest for a Charlemagne look alike"!, she cooed. "I think you could win it! You have that stern and wise ruler over a domain look you know"? "You think so"?, I asked. And then I quickly lunged for the mirror. "Yes, I believe you're right", I said as I examined my noble profile and saw a few pimples that needed immediate care. "Sign here. I will submit it", she said, as the words came out her ruby red lips and glistened in the sunlight. I did as she asked. I realized she was hypnotizing me into this, and, I didn't care!br /br /So, as you would know, I won the contest. In truth, it was quite easy when all the other contestants looked like Wallace Beery. The prizes were an unsold Yugo, boxes of bird seed, books by Hemingway with pages #49-#63 ripped out of each one, and a copy of Rod Stewart "Unplugged...and seated". I wonder if the real Charlemagne would have stood for this?br /br /Disgusted, I threw everything away, except for the c.d. which I threw, unopened ...and seated into my archives. It remained that way until after my current lecture series, titled simply "Closure: Metamorpho's Easy 12 Step Program to Whisk Away Annoying and Irritating Events in the Past that Have Absolutely No Bearing or Relevance Now Except that You Think It Does". I've been told the title is too long. At least fans of Kubrick like it.br /br /Anyway, good news to report! Rod Stewart "Unplugged...and seated" is a virtual GEM! Rod, as we know, have had his ups and downs in his career, but this c.d. is a vast treasure of all the elements that have made him exceptional over the years. All the aspects of his artistry are on display here, and he covers alot of terrain; from hard rockers, melancholy ballads, love odes, known hits and hidden treasures. There is something here for everyone to like. It is such an enjoyable proffering that I (almost) have nothing more to say. But, I will anyway.br /br /When thinking of the songs included, I can only marvel at the supreme wise choices they made. Admittedly, Rod's archives overbrim with tunes. And, within this format, there is only time for so much. So, selection becomes an imperative concern. He wisely chooses songs that he did with The Faces, great selections from "Every Picture Tells a Story" and other winners from his solo career. br /br /The backing band is professional and expert in bringing out every sound and shades of colour that we've heard in his studio cuts over the years. They are right on in their affect on every song. There is not a bad cut here, void of missteps, remarkable for live sound. Well, for a singer of Rod Stewart's stature, I would expect nothing less.br /br /He starts off with "Hot Legs", the correct choice to start off the evening. Tones it down to bring you the lovely "Tonight's the Night" and moves into an underappreciated gem from his first solo album, "Handbags and Gladrags". Then, for me, the best moment and best song here. Rod exclaims "Here's Ron Wood"! (his bandmate in the Faces and now a Rolling Stone) and then they kick into "Cut Across Shorty", a rockin' cut from Gasoline Alley. A tortoise and the hare tale about Shorty winning Miss Lucy's hand. This is a great tune.br /br /Aside from all the considerable compositions from "Every Picture etc.", all done expertly, Rod also includes other notable songs worth your consideration. The spiritual beauty of "People Get Ready" is given a revered treatment. The lovely "Have I told You Lately" is also on hand. And the sadness and melancholy of "Tom Traubert's Blues" and "The First Cut is the Deepest" has some of Rod's best heartfelt vocals. The shades and moods here are the finest.br /br /But, through the peaks and valleys, Rod brings your spirits up again with the closing numbers "Stay With Me" and "Having a Party". No, Mr. Stewart is not going to send you away with the weight of the world on your shoulders. There are 15 songs here. Rod's 15 step program. I fear this may be better than my 12 step program in many, many ways. ;)br /br /So, in closing, this c.d. is a real treat. As you know, I had to endure personal trials to bring it to you. But what I have learned, and maybe you folks have learned it too, is that there may be some hidden good in the situations that we feel are complete disasters. In this case, there certainly was. Music fit for a Emperor, methinks.br /br /Excathedra! ----- Metamorpho

5 out of 5 stars ROD AT HIS BEST.   September 28, 2007

IF YOU WERE A TEEN BACK IN MID TO LATE 70'S, THIS IS A MUST HAVE TO BRING BACK THOSE JOYFUL DAYS OF YOUTH. SOME TRACKS ARE BETTER THAN THE ORIGNAL TO ME.

4 out of 5 stars A Complete Surprise   April 11, 2007

I've never been a Rod Stewart fan, having hated his mid-period 'If you think I'm sexy' stuff and then just gave up on him until I heard this. A superb unplugged session from the early 1990's. br /br /Starting with a fiery version of 'Hot Legs', you know immediately this is Rod Stewart going back to his early 70's rock 'n' roll best. Track three is 'Handbags and Gladrags', now very familiar in the UK as the theme to 'The Office' that it came as quite a shock to here somebody sing it. I haven't heard the original version but this must push it close. br /br /Its not a perfect album though. Rod should have left Tom Waits 'Tom Traubert's blues (walting matilda)' well alone. Once you've heard Tom Waits original version nothing else is worth listening to. If you don't know Tom Waits, he has a voice that makes Rod Stewarts sound like an operatic soprano! br /br /Fortunately Rod saves the best until last and 'Mandolin Wind', 'Highgate Shuffle' and 'Stay with Me' are all rock 'n' roll Rod from the early 70's - absolutely superb. Sadly the DVD of this isn't available, but it was filmed, and hopefully it will be released one day.br /br /

Like the new Rod Stewart, but love the old Stewart. The more I listen to Unplugged, the more I appreciate his talent and place in RR pantheon.
