Editorial Reviews:

Drawing upon the softer side of the hippie folk scene with a more refined sound, America garnered a string of hits for themselves in the '70s. With a rich, acoustic base and lush, high tenor harmonies, songs like "Sandman" were instantly successful. The band's breakthrough single was the slightly country-tinged "Horse with No Name," (which hit number one) that owed a debt to the craftsmanship of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. IAmerica/I displayed the band's sensitivities with "Clarice" and "I Need You," the latter charting at number nine. While the band made a name for itself on the strength of "Horse" alone, the rest of the record deserves attention, too. While "Riverside" and "Children Here" never reached the status of later hits like "Sister Goldenhair" or "Lonely People," they still command respect. --ISteve Gdula/I

5 out of 5 stars Here Comes America   May 25, 2008

I got the vinyl of this one years ago and never thought as time went on that this one would stand the test of time but it did! When "Horse With No Name" came out I really thought it was another Neil Young follow-up to "Heart Of Gold". Well, they had a few singles off this album, another being "I Need You" and had a gold album. The CD is great even today and highly recommend it as well as seeing them "Live" which I did a few years back. visit my website "Judemac Forever" google it and say "Hi". One other side note, the songs pulled off this one for the America Greatest Hits collection in the 1970's were remixed by George Martin of Beatles fame.

I was a junior in high school when this album hit the airwaves...Hooked on America ever since...they were ahead of their time when it came to their craft...They are still going strong...Thanks for the memories.

5 out of 5 stars Unplugged before there was an MTV!   February 2, 2008

This is an outstanding album! It was a huge hit in 1972, spent five weeks at number 1 on the album charts, and went PLATINUM in the days when few albums did. While some of the lyrics may be trite (most of the songs were written while they were teenagers) the music is GREAT! If you love acoustic guitars, this album is a must. It includes their first number 1 hit single, Horse With No Name and another big hit I Need You. Several other songs received significant airplay on stations including Three Roses, Sandman, and Never Found The Time. The only weak song on the album is Pigeon Song. Highly recommended if you like acoustic guitar music! br /br /While this is a great album, this release of it is kind of expensive and you can find other CD's of this album for less.br /

5 out of 5 stars The best acoustic rock album ever   October 13, 2007

Hook laden guitar work, trippy lyrics, beautiful vocal harmonies. This record has it all. Despite alot of commercial success, America never got the respect. The first 3 albums (America, Homecoming, and Hat Trick) are acoustic rock masterpieces. Critics hated these guys and wrote them off as CSN ripoffs but the truth is nobody did this type of music better than America. Nobody.

I don't know how but somehow I missed out on this album when I was a kid. I guess I was put off by the Top 40 overplay by the AM radio back in the day....I'm just now coming back to re-discover America and I really understand why this album was so popular. I do believe they become overly saccharin on this album buy hey, that's America. This is a really, really good album that is well worth owning and certain to be listened to over and over again.
