5 out of 5 stars Great sound but no booklet in some cases   April 9, 2008
Great selection and great sound but prospective buyers should be aware that if you buy the set in the "fat boy" cd case the notes/booklet as in the photo above will not be included.

5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart at his best   January 30, 2007
Rod's best years, in my humble opinion were in the early years. This captures his raw talent before he became mainstream and a commercial success. I love his later works mind you, but for the true fan or a fan who wants to hear where it all started, this is it.br /Rarely a star can be played in todays market and on the "Classics" staion at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Classic   July 23, 2006

Rod in the beginning. Classic songs from one of the best voices in music. The Faces backed Rod on many of these songs. What a great band.(Too bad they were not the hit that they should have been in the states) Great songs, great voice, this is Rod Stewart at his best.

5 out of 5 stars The best available Rod Stewart album   September 7, 2000

Rod Stewart recorded most of his best work for Mercury records in the early 1970s before he turned his back on his folk-rock roots and unfortunately became a sex symbol. This album contains all of the great material from his first half dozen or so albums. Plenty of gems abound, including Maggie May, Handbags and Gladrags, Gasoline Alley, Mandolin Wind, Reason to Believe and many more. I would give this disc the nod over the box set Downtown Train, if only because I find Stewart's later material so maddeningly inconsistent.

3 out of 5 stars slight disappointment   March 8, 1999

I found this album somewhat of a disappointment. Since I am not a die-hard fan I find myself skipping over many songs that I have not heard to get to the gems. I probably would actually be happier with a stripped down version of this cd that included a few of his later hits.
