4 out of 5 stars Poetry.....   July 26, 2007
America returns to the music world in 1994 with "Hourglass"; an excellent showcase of the band's long-lasting songwriting talent and musical abilities.br /br /As always, their vocal harmonies are as smooth as glass and their songs are sheer poetry. They proved that they had not lost one iota of their talent and musicianship.br /br /Songs like Sleeper Train and Garden of Peace are classic examples of America songs that paint pictures with words and music. They even have reworkings of 2 "older" hits that they had way back when (Everyone I Meet Is From California You Can Do Magic).br /br /Well worth owning. You will listen to this one over and over and come away with something more each time.br /

4 out of 5 stars "Hourglass," is a timeless master piece   June 1, 2007
This is a greatly overlooked gem recorded by Beckly and Bunnell from 1994. br /I recently purchased their new release, "Here and Now" which I consider to be their best work within the last 20 years. After playing "Here and Now" nearly everyday I went back to their catalog looking for something else to sink my teeth into. br /"Hourglass," is the perfect companion piece. The opening song starts with a haunting Santanta type riff with a song titled, "Young Moon," and it's one of those songs that a person listens to once, and then they can't stop singing it through out the day.br /br /Other highlights are, "Hope." "Sleeper Train," and "Mirror to Mirror." br /With the exception of "Mirror to Mirror," all of these tracks are Bunnell pinned songs. For the most part this is a Bunnell solo project with limited input from Beckly. Interesting the new CD, "Here and Now," is more of a Beckly project.br /Therefore, I would encourage fans to purchase both CD's and get a full balanced America meal.br /br /"Hourglass" also features a hard gutiar driven song titled, "Greenhouse," which displays the group's rock roots, and picks up the tempo just at the point where "Hourglass" could have been dismissed as another dismisal MUZIC elevator filler album. Despite the fact that I've been a America fan since 1970, I have to admitt at times they have driffted off into the "Carpenters," and "Neil Diamond" zone.br /br /Songs like "Muskart Love," and "Sister Golden Hair" were a bit too cute to be taken seriously.br /However, as a whole for the last 35 years these guys have produced some of the best soft rock/pop rock music by anyone's standards.br /"Hourglass," is simply one of their best with current, and up to date material, and on time lyrics, hooks, riffs, and vocals.br /My only regret is that it took me 13 years to catch up with this over looked gem. (P.S. for Beach Boy fans this was one of Carl Wilson's last guest recordings before his untimely death, what a voice and talent).

5 out of 5 stars "Digital Tranquillity"   November 22, 2006

An impressive collaboration with the help of Chip Davis on string arrangements and the late Carl Wilson lending background vocals makes this CD a truly unique addition to any America fan collection. With songs like "Garden of Peace" who needs Xanax!!! You will be pleasantly suprised by this one!!! America just keeps getting better!!!

5 out of 5 stars HOURGLASS BY AMERICA IS TIMELESS BEAUTY!   August 14, 2006

HOURGLASS, A MUSICAL OFFERING IN THE MID-1990'S BY DEWEY BUNNELL GERRY BECKLEY OF AMERICA, IS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. ALL OF THE SONGS ARE CAPTIVATING. 'GARDEN OF PEACE' SOUNDS LIKE A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY INTO THE SOUL. CARL WILSON OF BEACH BOYS FAME ADDS HIS ANGELIC VOCALS TO BACK UP DEWEY'S LEAD VOCALS AND THE RESULT IS WONDERFUL.br /GERRY'S VOCALS ON 'PORTS OF CALL', 'CALL OF THE WILD'AND 'MIRROR TO MIRROR' ARE EXCEPTIONAL AND HARKEN BACK TO HIS YOUNGER DAYS. IF THIS GUY WASN'T INFLUENCED BY THE LATE, GREAT BUDDY HOLLY, THEN I DON'T KNOW WHO WAS.br /br /DEWEY'S VOCALS ON 'YOUNG MOON' AND 'GREENHOUSE' ARE STRONG AND ROCKIN'. THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS CD IS THE INTELLIGENT SONGWRITING ABILITY AND THE TALENTED MUSICIANS WHO HAVE COME TOGETHER TO CREATE THIS UNFORGETABLE OFFERING.br /br /BELIEVE ME, THIS CD, HOURGLASS, IS A TRUE CLASSIC OF ROCK, POP, FOLK ROCK AND RYTHM AND BLUES. THERE ARE ALSO NEWER VERSIONS OF 'YOU CAN DO MAGIC' AND 'EVERYONE I MEET IS FROM CALIFORNIA' TO ROUND OUT THIS CLASSIC MUSIC CD. A NOTEWORTHY ITEM IS THAT FORMER AMERICA MEMBER, DAN PEEK, HAD A HAND IN THE MAKING OF THIS CD, AS DID LOST IN SPACE'S BILL (WILL ROBINSON) MUMY, A GIFTED MUSICIAN IN HIS OWN RIGHT.br /br /BUY THIS CD. YOU'LL WANT TO RUN OUT AND BUY A GUITAR SO YOU CAN STRUM ALONG TO THESE GREAT TUNES. GO FOR IT! br /AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL!br /
