4 out of 5 stars Try this first   August 14, 2009
Tim Elliott (Sunny Florida)
This may be one of the best inventions of modern non-surgical medicine. My wife has had a messed up knee for years. This product, which helps the patella stay where it's supposed to, has kept my wife from having to have knee surgery that may or may not help. Not a guaranteed miracle, but damn close, at least for us.

4 out of 5 stars This was a gift...   July 11, 2009

I bought this as a gift and from what I can tell, it was appreciated and what she wanted. Don't know how well it is serving its purpose, but imagine that it is doing a good job. Rating it with stars is not really applicable, but I had to in order to submit it.

This has helped me tremendously, I am back to running again!
Only fault is the material is a little abrasive on the back of the knee if the velcro is not lined up flush when fastening. Otherwise great.

3 out of 5 stars Very well made, but not comfortable   February 1, 2009

My old "cho-pat" straps were getting worn out, so I ordered a new pair of this product. The product is well made -- it's high quality ballistic nylon and it had nice leather patches to keep the loops (where the strap goes) from being directly on the skin. Unfortunately, it was not very comfortable to wear. The sharp part of the velcro on the edge of the strap would make contact with my skin and scratch it. If the velcro part was made narrower than the rest of the strap, it would be much more comfortable. I ended up attaching the velcro end with a ridge in the middle (I sort of squeezed it before I attached it to the strap so that instead of the velco part laying flat on the strap it had a ridge in the middle of it; this had the effect of making the velcro par of the stap narrower so the edge would not contact my skin). This made it more comfortable, but it wouldn't attach as well.

Another thing I noticed is that the old pair of straps I used had a little bit of give to them -- they were made of a foam sort of fabric which had just a little elasticity. These straps have no elasticity whatsoever, and so it was hard to get them tight and they tended to fall down from the knee a little (maybe an inch) over the course of the day.

4 out of 5 stars It works, but it is a little bit uncomfortable around the edges.   January 28, 2009

This product is a solution to a problem that I thought could not be fixed. For years after a hard run I had what I thought to be shin splints. I think what I had was to be more accuratly described as patellar syndrone. The cliff notes version is there is a tendon that is attached to your knee and runs the length of your shin and if you knee cap is out of alignment it hurts really really bad to run or do anything if you aggrivate it.

To me it felt like there was some bone shards or something that were just poking out from the bone. It was not a disabling pain, but it was painful enough to where walking was uncomfortable. I could not run because the pain was too much. I described this to one of my friends one day and he mentioned products like this one were being advertised in runners world. On a whim I order 3 different types and this was one of them. I thought that to be fair I should evaluate some other products before being sold on them. I also did not want to get caught up in a placebo effect.

This was my second favorite strap of the three that I ordered. I also ordered a mueller strap, and futuro knee strap. The Gel strap is wider than I expected. The other straps I had are about an inch wide. This thing is double the size. The gel pad in the middle is a good size and that makes it comfortable. The wings on the wide of the strap keep it from moving. The reason I have rated it a 4 is because it is so large that it makes it harder to put in a position to where it works as well for me. Around the edge of the strap it rubs a little bit, and you need to be careful not to make it too tight.fortable. This thing won't move on you, and it WILL do the job. I ran 4 miles with the thing on and didn't have any problems afterwards.

This is not a fix for the problem I have, it only makes the pain bearable from what I was told. I have not had the problem with my "shin splints" since i have used any of the straps. This was the most expensive of the three straps I tried, and it does the job. I would try the Mueller strap first. I have no idea what sort of black magic it uses to make it work, but it is worth the $7 you will spend to try this thing. It works.
