Product Description
Dr. Keith Block is at the global vanguard of innovative cancer care. As medical director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Evanston, Illinois, he has treated thousands of patients who have lived long, full lives beyond their original prognoses. Now he has distilled almost thirty years of experience into the first book that gives patients a systematic, research-based plan for developing the physical and emotional vitality they need to meet the demands of treatment and recovery.

Based on a profound understanding of how body and mind can work together to defeat disease, this groundbreaking book offers:

• Innovative approaches to conventional treatments, such as “chronotherapy”–chemotherapy timed to patients’ unique circadian rhythms for enhanced effectiveness and reduced toxicity

• Dietary choices that make the biochemical environment hostile to cancer growth and recurrence, and strengthen the immune system’s ability to attack remaining cancer cells

• Precise supplement protocols to tame treatment side effects, relieve disease-related symptoms, and modify processes like inflammation and glycemia that can fuel cancer if left untreated

• A new paradigm for exercise and stress reduction that restores your strength, reduces anxiety and depression, and supports the body’s own ability to heal

• A complete program for remission maintenance–a proactive plan to make sure the cancer never returns

Also included are “quick-start” maps to help you find the information you need right now and many case histories that will support and inspire you. Encouraging, compassionate, and authoritative, Life over Cancer is the guide patients everywhere have been waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tool!   March 8, 2010

This book is structured with the care and precision only an experienced professional could provide. It is divided up into very useful sections beginning with setting up your support systems, followed by diet, physical fitness and mental health each in their own sections with criteria to determine which best fits your particular situation. At the beginning of the book he provides a CliffsNotes-type reference to pages from which you can obtain useful information with urgency, as he recognizes time is likely of the essence if you are reading the book. I quickly ran through the book and provided it to my mother who was recently diagnosed with stage-4 cancer and who said it was the most honest uplifting and accessible thing she had read since her diagnosis. It is fact based and realistic, unlike many books out there.

A great tool from a/the leader in Integrative Oncology.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable assist in my cancer battle   February 18, 2010
Gary D. Kellam
Doctors in my home state of Colorado gave me 4 months to live, said eat what I want and do what I want, but get my affairs in order; diagnosis (9/18/2009) stage 4 pancreatic cancer. My search for an alternative lead me to the Block Center in Evanston,IL. They provided me a comprehensive plan for my fight, to include chemotherapy, strict macrobiotic diet, extensive supplement regimen and mind/body components. I am at the 5 month point and following their plan I am doing extremely well. I am grateful for the opportunity to travel to Chicago every second week to receive what I believe is the best cancer treatment available anywhere. Dr. Block's book explains in detail the cancer treatment approach they favor, and I believe it is a must read for anyone battling this unfortunate scourge.

5 out of 5 stars A Priceless Resource   February 4, 2010
Barry Pitt (North Carolina)
Life Over Cancer is an invaluable resource for anyone who is dealing with cancer or has a loved one that is in that situation. It is packed with information and written in an easy to read manner. Dr. Block approaches this topic from both his own research, and the experiences of his patients. I found both angles to be important. The research was interesting, and because the battle against cancer is more than statistics and studies, the stories of his patients were very encouraging.

After reading Life Over Cancer, I became a patient of the Block Medical Center. Living in North Carolina and traveling to the Chicago area is not an easy trip. With that said, the Block Center has proven in so many ways to be the right choice that the trip to get there is more than worth it. The doctors and nurses are thorough, knowledgeable and caring. In some ways, I look forward to going for my chemo because of how great they are.

For anyone facing this challenge I encourage you to regard this book as an important tool for hope and recovery.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but what is the real cost?   January 4, 2010

Yes, this is a good book with helpful information; however, it is not easy to individualize most of what he's telling you without going to his clinic. Whether that was his intention or not, that is the result. In fact, it's suggested that some supplements may be detrimental to you depending on your individual needs, so how can you know unless you either go to the Block Center or find a doctor willing to go to these lengths? I guess I have to agree that it feels a bit like an advertisement in the end.

I realize it's not possible to individualize to a great degree in a book, and that there could be legal issues in trying to say you have specific answers for treatment, etc. So why did he go as far as he did only to then make your getting ALL the information dependent on going to his Center? I think it's a shame to lead people on that way. Maybe they could afford the book but can't afford more health-care or to travel. The supplements aren't covered by most insurance, so then what? That's if you're lucky enough to have insurance.

I did go, and I think anyone who is thinking of going should know that the supplements they sell are extremely expensive. It was disheartening, especially when you're so afraid that if you don't do everything they ask your chances of staying cancer-free aren't as good. Expect to pay hundreds of dollars a month. Who can afford that? For how long? It's a sad state of affairs and points again to the notion that only those who "have" are able to get the best health-care available. I also felt that the way he talks about the Block Center is not exactly how it is when you get there. It feels very much like a business, which didn't exactly scream "healing" to me.

Once again, the book has good general information, but so do several other books. No one doctor has all the answers, so learn to trust your gut and try not to act from a place of fear. I know it's hard to do that at a time like this, but it is possible. There's no one that knows your body as well as you do. He may be a wonderful man and doctor, but if he's managing your care by selling you something (his own supplements), it raises all sorts of red flags for me.

3 out of 5 stars Block Institute Advertisement   September 12, 2009

This book is good but very self serving. It is obviously just an advertisement for the author's institute, repeatedly extolling the successes (which sound real) of his cancer treatment methods and hinting at the potential for personalized treatment options. I'm sure Block does excellent, meaningful and worthwhile work, but unless you're interested in working with his clinic, skip this book and read Anticancer: A New Way of Life. It provides essentially the same messages and information without all the anecdotal success stories and clinical statistics.
