A gentle, philosophical, and somewhat reclusive figure, Smith is best known as the author "The Dutchman" and "Spoon River," perfect folk songs which seem to have always existed. His body of work is small but masterful. After an eight year hiatus from recording, Smith released this gorgeous, spare set of narratives and visions, featuring just him and his guitar. His picking is warm and intricate, and his voice seems to come from some distant, peaceful and wise place. His songs play along the widest scale of experience, from birth to death, both uncommon kindness and unbearable loneliness, in a language carefully whittled, always intense, first-hand, as if just pouring from him. 5 out of 5 stars Time after time   February 18, 2002

It was by pure chance that I discovered "time". Born in Israel, and not being a true folk fan, I have never heard of michael's work. brBut I guess that i was lucky: while subletting an apartment in New-Haven, I have listened to many hitherto unkown CD's. Most of which were simply trash. brBut not this one. As soon as heard the first notes of "Time" I immediatly fell in love with it. From those wonderful opening guitar cords until the last note of "we become birds when we die", what we have is an undeniable masterpiece. The songs are huge, the guitar is first rate. And the sum is greater than the parts.brTo me this CD is simply the best. It also serves as a firm proof that CD's don't last forever.....I have already wore down two. And counting.

To those music lovers who have not had the experience of Michael Smith's art -- wait no longer. TIME is one of those absolutely perfect recordings that one runs across only rarely. Each song is a gem, lovingly crafted, played and sung by an artist who is regarded by many to be a master of the folk/singer-songwriter genre. If he never did anything but write 'The Dutchman' or 'Spoon River' (both on his other Flying Fish release), his place in music history would be secure. Every single track on this disc rises to the level of those two notable tunes from his past. The recording is excellent, ably produced by long-time friend and collaborator Anne Hills -- just Michael's wonderful voice and masterful guitar. I've listened to music closely for nearly 40 years, and these ears can (maybe) only detect a slight overdub or two here and there. This is not only an excellent studio album, but a true indication of what Michael sounds like in person. His command of dynamics is unbelievable -- the first time I saw him live, he literally had the audience on the edge of their seats, hanging on every well-chosen word. Not to be missed! Also, check out the incredible duo album he recorded later with Anne Hills, LOST AND FOUND.

look, it's like this. i'm michael's brother peter. and you should know that time is one of the finest collections of songs you'll find anywhere. i'm partial to hawkins falls and we become birds but there is nothing here that won't reward the listener. actually, all of mike's records are quite literally, wonderful. you know, full of wonder.

The music gods give this kind of gift to only the very few .... buy this compact disc for its exquisite poetry and nuance guitar and you can trashcan your lesser CD's. Like its cover art rings of wood, this album offers its listeners layer upon beautiful layer of enduring art.
