3 out of 5 stars Comforting, Uplifting -- especially in these times   April 12, 2004

Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert have been friends for many, many years. And so, it was natural for them to decide to do an album together. What I find unique and inspiring, is that they chose (with two exceptions) to record *other peoples* songs, and that they decided to compile a collection of songs for humans living in a post-September 11th world. pEach of the songs they chose is fully of Love and Spirit, and seems to be trying to take from the events of September 11th, a sense of oneness with other human beings, rather than alienation. And hope and openness, rather than dispair. I especially love the choices of May I Suggest by Susan Werner, with front vocals by Vance, and The Only Way by Mark Erelli with front vocals by Ellis. May I Suggest, is a bold invitation to see the beauty and the blessings of now and what is held in our future. On The Only Way Ellis Paul sings his heart out, emboldening us all to live our lives in Love, not fear. pThe second to last cut, Alone Down Here one of the two tracks by Paul and Gilbert, challenges the listener to examine whether we are to live our lives cut off from the rest of the world, or rather, in an embrace of the world and all its challenges and blessings. This album is beautifully done. The vocals and the musicianship are fabulous. While the album strikes me as decidedly mellow, there is nice variety in sounds in these songs. I love this album, and have played it OVER and OVER again!

A Great CD for those who are fans of Ellis and Vance. This is a beautiful collection of songs--the production is simple and lovely, and the harmonies can be downright fascinating. I love it.
