5 out of 5 stars Incredible Performer   October 15, 2008
I recently got my first taste of Ellis Paul in a small club in the N. Georgia mountains. He brought his protoge Antje Duvekot with him. I was mesmerized with the anticipation of seeing and hearing her, but I was doubly thrilled to discover Ellis Paul. I bought this CD the next day and I haven't looked back. I saw Ellis again (recently) in Atlanta in a solo concert. If you purchase this CD you will forever be a fan. He is a throwback to some of the great story tellers of the 50's and 40's. I especially love Maria's Beautiful Mess, Angel In Manhattan, Alice's Champagne Palace and the beautiful "Conversation With a Ghost" with Patty Griffin singing harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the most underappreciated Singer Songwriter who's still going strong   April 17, 2008
I own all of Ellis Paul's CDs, and if you really like this album then I would recommend expanding your collection - especially grab his two disc Live album. This essentials compilation is a great grouping; I would have picked many of the same songs. In addition, the way that they are ordered is well thought out, as songs from different CDs with different sounds are arranged so that the contrasts aren't too sharp. Definitely an amazing release. I highly recommend these CDs.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, painfully vapid   June 16, 2007

Ok, I'm not a fan. I bought this CD because I like folk music, and the song "The World Ain't Slowin Down". The music on this album is fine, but the lyrics are so consistently vapid that I was disgusted that he dares mention Woodie Guthrie as his inspiration. Woodie sung about things going on, events of the past and hopes for the future. Woodie sang with social conscience and relevance. This guy sings like if he's scrawling on a bathroom wall--and has NOTHING to say. Granted 90+% of singers/songs do the same, and nobody seems to notice any lack, so my complaint is from the minority, but there you have it. (As a final insult, the last track moans and whines and destroys a song written by Woodie) br /br /I listened to every song. I hated this CD, I'm selling it immediately, and I demand my two hours back!

5 out of 5 stars Best song writer around   March 14, 2007
Ellis Paul is far and away the best modern song writer. Just close your eyes and see the stories unfold; from climbing the water tower to floating down fifth avenue in a taxi with an angel at your side. And that voice! There aren't many like him anymore. He is truly a classic. Not like that commercial garbage all over the radio nowadays. If you like Ellis give Martin Sexton a listen. Marty also is tops when it comes to song writing. Another Boston folk singer. Good stuff.br /

5 out of 5 stars Lots of music   January 9, 2007

Paul uses a unique style to give a wide variety of music. Very enjoyable. A good change of pace from the copy-cat tmes we're in right now.
