Product Description
The statistics are powerful and alarming: Perhaps as many as 6 million Americans suffer from night eating syndrome, or NESa newly identified eating disorder which describes behavior patterns in which an individual obsessively consumes more than half of his or her daily caloric intake after eight oclock in the evening. More significant is the further finding that more than 33 percent of morbidly obese individualspersons who are 100 or more pounds overweightare affected by this disorder. Experts agree that NES shares characteristic of not only eating disorders but also sleep and mood disorders. Sufferers tend to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of anxiety and guilt, insomnia or interrupted sleep. Typical NES behaviors include absent appetite during the day, a consistent pattern of eating more food after dinner than during the meal itself, and recurrent episodes of waking and eating throughout the night. This book, the first written specifically to people struggling with NES, offers a step-by-step strategy for managing and overcoming this disorder. PReaders will first learn to identify the signs of NES, and then use journaling exercises to discover what automatic thoughts surround their night eating. Having identified the problematic behaviors, the reader learns how to break the patterns with healthier food choices, more structured mealtimes, and a series of relaxation and visualization techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Night Eating Syndrome   April 9, 2008
I believe it goes along with most eating things - keeping a journal will aid in so many things. I think it is a great idea to figure out the "issue" and go from there. Syndrome covers a lot of area! I believe that this book is very informative and something one should definitely share with others.

5 out of 5 stars not alone   September 8, 2006

I have struggled with night eating for many years. When I would speak to my doctor about this he was very unaware of this type of eating. I am very pleased that this has been researched. I believe that most people were unaware that we were not the only ones eating at night. The book was a huge help to me.br /Thank you,br /Ellen Ochs

4 out of 5 stars Simple Book About Understanding And Overcoming NES   August 5, 2006

****br /This is a simple, but thorough book about Night Eating Syndrome, a quick read (only 167 pages), but full of information. It starts out with assistance in evaluating if you have NES...however, I think that this book would be helpful to anyone who overeats at night, whether or not they fit all of the criteria for NES. br /br /It includes chapters on how to rule out other eating disorders and physical disorders, the biology and psychology behind night eating, hormonal involvement in night eating, types of night and eating and suggestions/plans for overcoming each. The interventions are pretty predictable, but still helpful, including journaling, imagery, relaxation, and other behavioral interventions. Support, medications, perseverance, and Internet resources are also discussed.br /br /All in all I thought it was a fine, easy to understand book about a little-discussed disorder just now coming to public attention.br /****

5 out of 5 stars Thought I was alone with this.   July 31, 2006

This book was amazing to me. With just the intro and first chapter read, I was able to adjust my behavior enough to minimize eating long into the nite and early A.M. And that was just a beginning. It took me 40+ years to find out this is not just my problem. If you know someone or if that someone is you, come out of hiding and get control over your life. This effects all aspects of life. To find this, was overwhelming and freeing.

I found this book to be very informative and helpful. It was nice to know that I am not alone and to learn ways to handle my night eating.
