4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Informative.   October 6, 2009
E. Bartschenfeld (Prairie Farm Wisconsin United States)
The book is amazing. Very thorough and entertaining. I have had the pleasure of going on an edible plant walk with Samuel, he is so knowledgable and interesting. A wonderful job. Cannot wait for the next book, he almost has it ready.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Book for a Beginner   September 14, 2009
Marcus (New Auburn, WI)
This is the best book for a beginner. this book shows you how to store, prepare and harvest on top of showing you how to identify plants. this book has some depth to it. He describes the plant very well with added pictures for confirmation, he'll show you look alike plants so you dont get mixed up, he shows you what part of the plant you can eat, how to prepare it, how to harvest it, and some of his personal stories which make the book light and fun to read. he doesnt discuss very many plants but you will know EVERYTHING about the plants he does discuss. this is very important for beginners like me to build confidence in knowing that what your going to eat is actually what you think it is.

i also bought The Illustrated Guide to Edible Wild Plants, also on amazon. this book covers many many plants but is very vague. for example: it warns that there are poisonous look-alikes but doesnt discuss them. for me, quality always beats quantity. so the foragers harvest is a better book, IMO. but its nice to have both books. one very descriptive book and one that will cover anything i might see but if i had to choose one id choose the foragers harvest.

5 out of 5 stars best book ever   September 10, 2009
Kelly Combs
I have read a lot of books on the subject and I practice wilderness survival. I am always looking for new plants to add to the ones I already know about. Edible plants arte certainly my weakest area of wilderness survival and I have read and tried so many other books. This book explained things no other book has about the plant and preparation of them. It reintroduced my to plants I have tried and gave up on long ago because the other books just didn't explain how to prepare them or the best parts to eat or how to harvest them in a timely manner. This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject. It doesn't cover a lot of plants but I the detail of the book is what makes it so great. I will buy ever book Samuel Thayer ever write regarding this subject. He clearly has an intimate knowledge of the subject and practices regularly that which he speaks of. He is honest and forth right through out the book and I learned a lot about plant I have already studied for years. I only wish I had an index of every wild plant written in this same fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Real experience, real information.   August 30, 2009
Blister
This guide is primarily for the northern states and south eastern Canada but many of the plants he covers are more widespread. It is not complete and not intended to be. It is primarily the most useful and widespread wild plants that the author has used. He gives very specific and practical advice on the plants he covers. If you are from the north or northeast and are seriously interested in harvesting from the wild then this book will be a practical and extremely effective start.
Good detail and practical uses.
Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars the forager's harvest   July 30, 2009
Donnell Hunter
This seems very thorough on what it covers, but it is limited to what the author personally has used. His writing style is bold and helpful. There are more plants I would like to know about that he doesn't include.
