Amazon.com Review
Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

1 out of 5 stars Read this if you need spiritual shortcuts   November 7, 2009
F. Carter (Akron, Ohio)
This book is a new-agey collection of animal related ideas. The author pulls from lots of sources and expects the reader to somehow assume that they will have the same relation with the animal.

Consider this: If you are in a tribe that revers the bear for its strength and ability to sustain the winter you are likely to hold it in highregard for those things. If you are from a people that has deadly conflicts of the bear it might be a symbol of adversity and danger. Either way, you relation to an animal and its relation to you is always going to be dependent on your actual experience.

How can anyone but you know what your relationship with an animal is? Why let someone deaden an opportunity for you to go out in the world and appreciate the animal spirits you actually encounter? The truth is that even if you are having night time dreams or psychic visions of the bald eagle you are most likely having them becuase of something you read or saw on tv. That does not make the "vision" less important, but it does mean the symbolism is likely different and quite possibly not in any way connected to the natural version of the animal.

You are only cheating yourself by going this route. If that's what you want, then dig in!

Interesting book and perspective on animals. I believe the Spirit communicates to us many ways, and this book helps us to understand maybe a little better.

This is probably his best, but it's hard to choose. It is the most comprehensive compendium on animals and totems that I have found. Ted Andrews left a magnificent legacy of his knowledge and teachings. We will surely miss him.

5 out of 5 stars Animal Speak: the Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small   October 27, 2009
S. Hales (San Francisco)
The book arrived promptly, in perfect condition, and for a great price. Thanks for the excellent service and deal! This is a great book for those interested in animal totems, animal spirit guides, and/or animal archetypes, and in working with the animal totems' energies and/or symbolism. For instance, I looked up the eagle totem and the book actually goes into a lot of detail about the animal and it's behavior, what it might symbolize to various cultures, and even different types of eagles and their possible specific meanings.

Thinking about what animals mean to us on a spiritual, psychological , and/or on a practical, real-world levels are good practices and this book helps a lot, with suggestions for various specific ways to identify and interact with your own animal totems.

My daughter got this copy because I would not give her mine! Her new husband and friends are now sharing nature on a whole new level, as my daughter and I continue the same!
