Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This one is a "must" for learning how the French REALLY talk!William Martin, retired political editor, The Oakland TribuneI've tried them all and this one is it!Joe Hogan, CBSWith these Audio CDs you will work on natural conversations with our unique Active Sensory ComprehensionTM method. You will learn your new language both effectively and efficiently. You will develop your listening skills. For reference, we give you a booklet with the transcripts and the translations. Our color-coding system will help you pronounce the words and sentences the way you will hear them pronounced in real life conversations. This step by step approach to the language will help you understand French, like no other method, early in your studies. With these CDs you will start to understand and speak the language as spoken in the real world. If you are a true beginner, you might want to work with our SmartFrench Introduction to French, Vol.1 and SmartFrench Introduction to French, Vol.2 in order to work on the basic vocabulary, conjugation and grammar. Learning French requests that you learn to speak French and that you learn to understand it. Vol.1 and Vol.2 will teach you the basics in order to speak the language and these CDs will teach you to understand and be understood as you will develop strong listening skills. The best is to practice both exercises simultaneously. No matter what other sources you use in your language learning, the Smart thing to do is give yourself this key to confidence.Ian Jackson, CEO, Breathplay, Dallas

3 out of 5 stars Behind the Wheel French is Better!!   December 1, 2008
Maybe Smart French is a 'comme ci comme ca' French course if you're comparing it to Living Language or Berlitz.br /But if you compare it to Behind the Wheel - French 1 (Behind the Wheel) there is simply no comparison. Here's why:br /1. Smart French isn't so 'smart' after all. They explain far too much and then provide far too little real practice. Behind the Wheel French begins immediately to give you an English meaning, but then shoots to the French.br /2. Once again, no creative expression. You do not get to learn to create 'original language' like you can with Behind the Wheel French. And I mean right away, not after a lengthy lecture in English.br /2. Since the explanations in Smart French are so long, you're wasting valuable language learning time that could be better spent learning how to speak real French. Behind the Wheels explanations are brief, concise, and then you immediately begin to speak original French.br /Perhaps these two courses could be used together. Behind the Wheel French is by far the most essential. Once you've learned to speak a good deal of French, you could then move on to the more academic and traditional Smart French.

4 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy   November 24, 2008
This was quick and easy. I actually bought this to help my children with audible French. The listen to it repeatedly.

5 out of 5 stars the lost bean   November 24, 2008
I found The Smart French series volumes 1 and 2 a very effective way to study French. They easily teach the useful words that you hear in everyday conversation. They do this in with a minimum amount of time spent vs words you learn. I think the most helpful aspect of this series for me is that it plays the words as they sound in a real environment. A number of other courses I have purchased in the past seem to be built around words and phrases that you will probably never hear, and are unlikely to use (unless you need to buy a bowler hat.) I would recommend these products.

5 out of 5 stars Oui tres smart!   November 23, 2008
We are Americans that just moved to Paris, and SmartFrench was critical in us quickly learning French to be prepared to live here. The emphasis on real world communication was so valuable. "Street" pronunciations not "formal", immediate conversational learning, the emphasis on immediate usability, all these elements accelerated our learning curve. We find ourselves more functional in Paris than we would have with other learning systems. Thank you SmartFrench!!!! :)

4 out of 5 stars Good way to start French lessons   November 21, 2008
While I have enjoyed listening and trying to learn from these audio cd's, I do feel that personal lessons are inevitable. Christian speaks really fast on some of these and makes it very difficult to try to repeat at times. I get a little frustrated and turn it off, ha! He is good though and very nice to listen to.
