The university graduation ceremony is an essential feature of the British summer calender, as prominent and visible in its pomp as Ascot, Henley, Test Match cricket and the Lord Mayor's Show, yet more ancient and widely attended than any of these. Certainly, the participants at graduation ceremonies are - by a long way - more extravagantly dressed than the others. The only thing is: what does it all mean?pPhilip Goff's book traces the evolution of academic dress throughout the ages, emphasising its historical and cultural importance in the development of European Universities. This is not a weighty thesis by any stretch of the imagination, but it manages to condense a wealth of information into its 56 pages. A potentially obscure and difficult subject is made lively and engaging by the clear and concise prose, but perhaps best of all are the charming illustrations - numerous early line engravings mingle with sophisticated computer generated images.pThis is an excellent introduction to a somewhat arcane British idiosyncracy and will appeal to a far wider readership than London University alumni.
