Amazon.com Review
There are more high-salaried women in the workforce today than ever before, yet most females remain seriously underpaid when compared to their male counterparts. Motivational speaker and financial journalist Barbara Stanny decided to find out why by identifying the differences between those who draw the big bucks and those who don't. In ISecrets of Six-Figure Women/I she reveals what makes the leading edge tick, as well as how others can use the information to boost their own paychecks and self-esteem. "For far too many women, financial limits have become a fact of life. The thought of making more is like climbing Mount Everest, a colossal, if not impossible task," writes Stanny. "That's exactly how I used to feel." By examining scores of top moneymakers, along with dozens of those earning below their potentials, Stanny discovered what works and what doesn't. After analyzing the subsequent lessons (i.e., you actually can boost your income without selling out, the requisite traits to do so can be developed by virtually anyone, money really can't buy happiness), she proposes specific strategies for maximizing their impact (intend from the start to succeed, stretch yourself, manage any payoff with care). Stanny professes throughout that she desires to offer "insight, hope and guidance to any of you who aspire to earn more." With this surprisingly practical and ultimately inspirational guidebook, she delivers. I--Howard Rothman/I

5 out of 5 stars Good insight on what works and what doesn't for earning higher salaries   November 22, 2008
How is it that some women are such high earners? I've often reflected that I already work hard and I can't imagine working yet even harder in order to reach a six-figure income. However, high-earning women don't necessarily work harder (at some point you just get worn out), they work smarter. This book dispels that myth and a number of others surrounding high earning women. The author uses information she has gathered through interviews and research to unveil how some women are able to earn high salaries. I had several "ah-ha!" moments reading this book and learned some new strategies to do things differently in order to achieve a higher level of success. This was definitely a book I can use and was fun to read. (I had difficulty putting the book down!)br /br /I would definitely recommend this book to any woman who wants to earn more money. However, I would also advise readers to read this in conjunction with a book on personal finance (perhaps one specifically for women, like Lois Frankels's Nice Girls Don't Get Rich: 75 Avoidable Mistakes Women Make with Money). One disappointing finding from this book is that many high-earning women are not good savers. Don't be one of them - learn to earn and learn to invest in your future as well!br /

5 out of 5 stars Potentially life changing advice about earning more money   November 17, 2008
This is an excellent book. Barbara Stanny doesn't just theorize about money, she interviews women who are either high earners ($100K to $7 million per year) or underearners. One of her most helpful findings is that underearners don't work less hard than women who earn more, they just get paid a lot less for putting in all the hours and effort. Ms. Stanny also explores some of the psychological reasons that women might tolerate being underearners, starting with some assumptions that poverty is somehow more noble or that focusing on attaining high earnings means sacrificing too much in the rest of your life. Also useful was her finding that many of the high earning women decided to increase their financial security after a painful life event such as bankruptcy or burnout. Setting a clear intention to become a high earner was their first step in making it happen. If you are unhappy with your current earnings level, this book may offer life changing steps to do something about it.

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready to find the answers?   September 29, 2008

Why are women still underpaid? Does self-esteem and earning six-figures go hand-in-hand? Do women place financial limits on themselves? With insight and practical real-world guidance Barbara Stanny helps us discover our inner six-figure woman. Are you ready to find the answers? br /br /My copy of Secrets of Six-Figure Women is dog-eared, underlined, written in the margins and covered with sticky notes. I've used it in the question and answer portion of my seminars and have recommended it as a group read for leaders. Let me ask you: Are you earning and saving for the lifestyle you want to be consistently living and enjoying? br /br /I believe one of the most important exercises in this book is the value-clarification exercise. I've learned from my own personal experiences that I will not succeed at anything that goes against my true core values. Your values fuel your motivation to succeed and earn. It's well worth taking the time to work and study the results of this activity.br /br /Do you think that living the lifestyle of your choice, making the money you deserve and enjoying life is based on something deeper than just making money? Isn't it really about feeling worthy and deserving of making six figures? Isn't it about making money while nurturing healthy self-esteem?br /br /Earning six-figures has nothing to do with age, education or luck. It does have everything to do with your desire to live a healthy, happy and financially satisfying life. Are you ready to earn your six-figure (and even seven-figure) income? Are you ready to stop underearning and to begin living up to your full earning potential? br /br /I highly recommend Secrets of Six-Figure Women. I've personally seen it become a life changing eye opener for women who are tired of surviving and are ready to begin thriving in their financial life.br /

The "secrets" in this book are typical of the incomplete thinking that is common to so many books on success, as explained in "Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense" by J Pfeffer.br /br /In a nutshell, the author reveals these mundane "secrets" which also ignore the millions who start their own businesses and fail but who also follow these strategies:br /br /SECRET 1: Financial Success Is Possible in Almost Any Field, andbr /Lack of Education Doesn't Have to Hold You Back.br /SECRET 2: Working Hard Doesn't Mean Working All the Time.br /SECRET 3: Focus on Fulfilling Your Values Rather Than Financial Gain.br /SECRET 4: Loving What You Do Is Much More Importantbr /Than What You Do.br /SECRET 5: Feel the Fear. Have the Doubts. Go for It Anyway.br /SECRET 6: Think in Terms of Trade-offs, Not Sacrifices, to Find a Workable Equilibrium.br /SECRET 7: Sometimes You Just Have to Shrug It Off and Have a Good Laugh.br /SECRET 8: Appreciate Abundance.br /br /SIX-FIGURE TRAITSbr /1.A profit motive. Money per se may not be their driving force, but six-figure women absolutely expect to be well compensated for their work. They want to make money. They feel good about making money. They enjoy what money gives them. Profit, to these women, has a positive ring.br /2.Audacity. Every woman I interviewed came to a point where she had to step outside her comfort zone and do something she wasn't completely sure she could do. It was rarely an experience she relished, nor did she always succeed. But she worked up the moxie to make the effort.br /3.Resilience. They all had the grit to get back up and keep going when they didn't succeed or when they encountered setbacks.br /4.Encouragement. Six-figure women have tremendously nurturing relationships with one or more people who believe in them, support them, continually root for them, and sometimes prod them along. Some, but definitely not all, had encouraging parents. Every one has remarkable friendships. And for those in a committed relationship, a supportive husband or partner is invariably cited as essential to their success.br /br /STRATEGIES FOR EARNING MOREbr /br /1. Declare your intention to make good money.br /2. Let go of where you are (leave your job if you feel stuck)br /3. Decide which game to play - "play it safe" or "gamble to win"br /4. Jump in, ready or not.br /5. Keep on truckin'.br /6. Grab opportunities.br /7. No excuses allowed.br /8. Ignore naysayers.br /9. Never personalize.br /br /

5 out of 5 stars It changed my life   February 15, 2008
This book made me recognize that I was an under earner and living in financial chaos. I am so glad that I read it because it helped me to make some positive changes in my life. I would recommend it for everyone.
