Product Description
i#8220; I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.#8221; /iJanuary 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she#8217;s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb#8230;.brbrAs Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends#8212;and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society#8212;born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island#8212;boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.brbrJuliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society#8217;s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.brbrWritten with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable and Unique!   January 9, 2009
Amazing book! A wonderful world of fascinating characters, haunting history and sweet humor. I loved this book and will surely read it again. I'm also recommending it to everyone I know. Brilliant writing!

5 out of 5 stars good as pie   January 8, 2009
For a novel told strictly through letters it is hard to convey information sometimes and even limits plot points for a writer, but these women who authored this book did an outstanding job creating a full, populated world without sacrificing anything. I loved the hominess of the book and the feeling of piecing together the story bit by bit. Similar to a "diary format", this novel lets you enter immediately into the characters' lives and use your own imagination to fill in the blanks. This is a perfect read for bibliophiles who take pride in their book collection. Fine story.

You know you love a book when you hold it to your heart when you are finished and you are sorry it's over. This has to be the best book I have read in a long time...and I read a LOT..br /This book is a treat and I encourage everyone to read itbr /I dearly loved itbr /Joan Omstead

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating history in letter form   January 6, 2009
The quirky characters come to life via letters in this wonderful read that also educates about life during and post WWII. I found myself drawn in immediately and didn't want this book to end.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what you need on a cold and rainy winter night   January 6, 2009
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was an absolute joy. Wonderful story. Hate to be cliche but made me laugh and cry. Smiling at the end. Sometimes thats all you need.
