Amazon.com Review
In 1978, science fiction writer Spider Robinson wrote a scathing review of The Stand in which he exhorted his readers to grab strangers in bookstores and beg them not to buy it.

The Stand is like that. You either love it or hate it, but you can't ignore it. Stephen King's most popular book, according to polls of his fans, is an end-of-the-world scenario: a rapidly mutating flu virus is accidentally released from a U.S. military facility and wipes out 99 and 44/100 percent of the world's population, thus setting the stage for an apocalyptic confrontation between Good and Evil.

"I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke."

There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book. --Fiona Webster

4 out of 5 stars Awesome book, good enough conversion   March 15, 2010
John Deurbrouck (Redmond, WA United States)
The Stand is a great novel, drawn vivid and epic. I'd not read it for almost twenty years and reading it again was like rediscovering an old friend.

The Kindle edition is generally acceptable. There are number of hyphenization errors and incorrect words (artifacts of the OCR process such as "comer" for "corner"), but not to the point where it interfered much with enjoying the story. However, the errors made a 5-star rating impossible for me.

I always find it unsettling when an author revisits a work with which I have already formed a bond. I was concerned that perhaps I'd previously read the original version rather than this unabridged one, and would find changes that were unfamiliar or discordant. Turns out this edition is the same as that which I first read. If the phrase "happy crappy" rings a bell, this is the one you read before as well.

I much prefer a light Kindle to a heavy book. In fact, I'd put off rereading my wife's hardcover of The Stand for the past 18 months or so for that very reason; my best recommendation of this Kindle edition is that its convenience freed me to enjoy this story once more.

5 out of 5 stars Read it 3 times!!   March 4, 2010

I'm an avid King fan and this is by far my favorite book. I read it as a teenager and reread it a couple of years ago rediscovering this "apocalyptic" tale.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but other SK is better   March 3, 2010
Justin Fowler (Indianapolis, Indiana)
For the record I read the unabridged version so I am not commenting on the other version that was a slightly different story. I liked the book for the most part. However, it is like reading two different books. The first half is very scientific and feels like a SK book. The second half feels someone else wrote it. It is not bad persay, but it just feels like the story goes from a scientific based novel and how humanity would react to something like this to this weird story about good versus evil that just does not flow well. I would still recommend it and if you can find it on TV or DVD watch the movie version The Stand. It helps clarify a few parts, but also shows how the flow of the second half of the book is. It was written and produced by SK. Look for him in a few cameo spots. He looks different without his glasses.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS OF ALL-TIME!   March 3, 2010
bond007 (L.A., Cali)
The Stand can stand alone as a testament through time. The engrossing novel has it all and then some: absorbing characters, a creepy setting and dreamscape, the baddest villain imaginable, all plot-driven by the master himself. It's one of those stories that people should definitely read. Another one readers should like is Final Outcome: An Apocalyptic Mystery Thriller.

4 out of 5 stars A good extension of a very good book.   March 3, 2010
S. Goodwin (Taos, NM)
I'm not sure I understand all of the negative reviews that come at this book from a length angle-- hey, it's a LONG FREAKING BOOK, didn't you notice that when you bought it??? I thought the added description was great, that is, after all, why I bought this extended version.

I am not a rabid King devotee (I've only read about 4 of his books), but I really enjoyed the book when I read it about ten years ago-- enough to buy the author's-- this second-- version. I though this version did a great job expanding the characters and DEFINITELY a good job explaining Trashcan Man (otherwise I was pretty much just "huh" about his character).

I guess the reason I stick with a 4 star rating is that I thought the ending just didn't measure up. I know, I know (she says, ducking hurled rotten veggies from those of you who gave the book a 5) but it just felt, well, appended, somehow. I don't mean the part of the ending where (SPOILER!!! SPOILER COMING!!!!!) Stuart and Fran go off to start lives of their own, I mean the final confrontation between good and evil. I just thought the whole Mother Abigail part of the story was weak. Maybe that's just because it's so much easier to paint evil than it is to paint good? I don't know. I DO know that Flagg was highly entertaining, as usual....
