Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
divRecurrence of depressive episodes is not uncommon, even after successful treatment. What makes some people more vulnerable than others to this devastating disorder? Do depressive individuals have characteristic thinking and reasoning styles? By what means can cognitive antecedents to affective disorders be identified at different stages in the lifespan, and how can the risks they represent be mitigated? An important resource for anyone who seeks to understand or treat depression, this volume synthesizes the most current research and theory on cognitive vulnerability. Covering methodological, theoretical, and empirical issues, the authors review cognitive theories of depression; explicate and assess the vulnerability approach to psychopathology; and formulate an integrative view of the key proximal and distal antecedents of depression in adults. br/div

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject   September 24, 2000
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This work is certainly the most useful and comprehensive work on cognitive vulnerability available. It will be useful to both researchers and clinicians with a research background. The book covers the fundamentals of cognitive theory, then proceeds to an exhaustive summary of the research and findings on the cognitive dimensions of depression, cognitive predictors of depression, different types of causal traits and, appropriately, methodological problems in cognitive research on depression. Certainly not a self-help book, but extremely useful for diligent and evidence-based therapists who wish to turn its information into useful interventions.
