5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book by a Brilliant Author   July 30, 2009
Robert S. Gerowitz (Palatine, Illinois)
Dr. Despotidis is an exceptional practitioner and an acknowledged Orthokeratologist. His opinions and viewpoints are sought after by others in this exciting field. "My Children are Nearsighted Too" is a well written, informative, and concise book that is a valuable resource for anyone wanting to learn more about Corneal Reshaping; how it works and how it can benefit those who wish to slow down and even stop progressive nearsightedness.

5 out of 5 stars A great primer on Myopia and Orthokeratology   July 21, 2009
Nathan J. Warford (Tampa, FL)
As a nearsighted optometrist who has a young daughter, I was extremely interested in "My Children Are Nearsighted, Too." I, like Dr. D., have performed eye-exams on young children and have watched their myopia increase over time. Like him, I have read the scientific studies and tried to determine the best method to limit the progression of their nearsightedness over time. This is not always easy.

Most parents do not have the time or desire to research the theories and mechanisms of myopia development. Fortunately, Dr.D. and his collaborators have collected this information and placed it all in one easy-to-read book. Topics covered include why some people are more prone to develop nearsightedness than others, helpful guidelines on ways to limit eye strain, and the options that exist to try to reduce or eliminate progression of myopia.

Special attention is placed on orthokeratology (also called corneal reshaping or Ortho-K). The main goal of this treatment is to eliminate the need for daytime glasses or contacts. That is exciting by itself. But the newest research shows that a side effect of Ortho-K, is the slowing or stopping of myopia progression. The is truly revolutionary.

I think the strength of "My Children are Nearsighted, Too" is the balance between its easy-to-read style and technically accurate and up to date information. Interspersed are comments and stories from patients that add a personal dimension.

One thing the book is NOT is a self-help book of the "See without glasses" category. While some of those may be helpful for specific people, they are not appropriate for the general population, especially without consultation with your eye doctor.

I really like this book and recommend it. I have bought several copies to share with parents who are concerned with their children's vision and development of nearsightedness. While I encourage parents to get as much information from a variety of sources, "My Children are Nearsighted, Too" is a great resource.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for Parents with Questions   March 28, 2009
VTDoc2009 (Connecticut)
This is an amazing book that answers the unanswered and often unasked questions of parents. Dr. Despotidis uses wit, knowledge, and compassion to ease the fears, guilt, and concerns of parents who want to provide the best for their children.

As a soon-to-be pediatric optometric practitioner, I recommend this book to parents and will continue to do so when I am in practice.

A must read for parents who are faced with the difficult decisions about the right eyecare for their children.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "MUST READ" for anyone who wears glasses or has children wearing glasses   March 24, 2009

Dr. Despotidis has really done the public a huge favor. He has taken a subject that few people understand, that effects most of us and our children, and has given insight, understanding, and hope to the millions of people who find themselves "victims" of stronger and stronger glasses.
The book is an easy read, and highlights the current successful, safe, FDA approved, non-surgical treatments of myopia or nearsightedness. The many case examples are inspiring. I highly recommend this book if you are concerned about your or your child's vision and reject the same old recommendations that traditional eye doctors have been offering for the last 30-40 years or more. After you read this book you will definately want to pass it along to a relative, friend, or colleague. Thank you Dr. Despotidis for sharing your expert knowledge and experience. I will recommend this book to my patients.
Dr. Stan Appelbaum, Developmental Optometrist, Bethesda, Maryland

5 out of 5 stars An Answer To My Questions   March 4, 2009
Priscilla Song
As a parent, I always felt a sense of guilt that my children had to wear glasses nor did I understand why they started wearing them so young.

This book answered all of my questions and broke down technical information in a way I was able to understand and relate to my children. Not only did it provide tips on good posture and proper lighting for reading but also explained all the vision correction options available.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to better their understanding of nearsightedness and the treatment options.
