Amazon.com Review
In these times of massive credit card debt and stagnating incomes, filing for bankruptcy has become the only relief for thousands of people. The information in How to File for Bankruptcy is so complete that a person can file virtually on his own, without needing to hire a lawyer. By no means does the book encourage filing for bankruptcy, but it will help anyone in serious financial trouble determine if bankruptcy might be a sensible course to take, and examines what kind is appropriate for different individuals. All of the necessary forms are included, complete with explicit directions. Like all Nolo Press titles, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense book of useful advice and specific guidance, written in clear, easy-to-understand language.

Product Description
Find debt relief by filing bankruptcy with this all-in-one-book!

If you have more debt than you can possibly pay off, the bankruptcy system is there to help -- and with How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, you'll find the clear and user-friendly information, advice and forms you need to get through the entire process.

First, the book will help you determine whether you qualify for Chapter 7 --and whether it is the best way to deal with your debts. Then you'll find out how to:

  • stop wage garnishments and attachments
  • fill out and file all the forms
  • cancel as much debt as possible
  • deal with secured debts
  • keep the maximum amount of property
  • keep your home, if possible
  • rebuild credit after bankruptcy

The 15th edition is completely updated and revised to reflect the latest laws and legal forms, plus the line-by-line instructions you need to fill them out. Get new information on foreclosure and exemption requirements, and read the latest court decisions. And, easy-to-use charts make looking up your state's laws a snap.

Please note: This book does not cover business bankruptcies, farm reorganizations or individual repayment plans (Chapter 13). For Chapter 13 bankruptcy, see Nolo's Chapter 13 Bankruptcy: Repay Your Debts.

5 out of 5 stars Well Deserved 5 Star Rating   November 8, 2009
Steve Dietrich (Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Monica CA, United States)

Normally I am suspicious when a book has a lot of 5 star ratings. However, NOLO consistently wins these ratings on their books.

I have purchased several of these guides for friends who are way over their heads in the current financial crisis. The guide goes from the conceptual to helping you fill out the actual forms that will be required. Provides very detailed guidance on the issues and guidelines for filing, what works and what does not work.

For most people bankruptcy was unthinkable until the last few years. However, with the recession and collapse of home values bankruptcy is, in many cases, the most responsible path to recovery. The guide also offers some encouragement and also some very direct warnings about what not to do (hide assets ) . It's great advice.

As you can see from some of the other posts, armed with only this guide a number of people have done their own bankruptcy filings. Even if you use an attorney, this guide will be helpful and will help save legal fees.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars great book   November 1, 2009
    Reiven West (L.A., CA, USA)
This book is easy to read and breaks down an overwhelming process into do-able chunks. The layout is clear, intuitive and logical. I'm sure this will sound strange, but reading this book actually had the effect of calming me down. I went from holding my breath and a paralyzed brain to breathing, relaxing my shoulders and thinking "wow, I can do this!" I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Includes great information and was very helpful   August 26, 2009

What can I say about this book? It is a great source of information about Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and can help aide your decision about whether or not you wish to file for Bankruptcy or not, as well as how you may wish to go about it: by Lawyer/Legal Firm, through a organization that is cheaper but still charges a fee, or for those brave souls that want to do it themselves with the help of this book...

I found this book very helpful with explaining all key and important facts about the whole process, and it made me feel confident that I could do this myself (with the book to guide me through the process) and save myself a lot of money doing so (just paying the fee to file for the Bankruptcy itself). I have decided to hold off on filing for now, but know that if and when I decide to do it, that I will be able to do so with the confidence needed and the knowledge necessary to do it correctly.

This book also includes all necessary forms that you would need to fill out as well as charts to help you figure out if filing for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is the best thing for you or not. You get to see everything that you would have to do upfront and this can be very helpful as well.

I recommend this book to anyone that is filing for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy or is even just thinking about it. It brings the truth about filing for Bankruptcy to the table and blows away all those misconceptions and myths normally associated with Chapter 7 and Bankruptcy in general.

This book is good for a single individual or a married couple. No so good for a spouse that is filing alone in a community property state. Some of the questions need a more detailed explanation of why it is asked.

4 out of 5 stars A well organized informative resource!   July 23, 2009

How to file for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is a well written manual to assist those of us who are needing this type of financial advise. The book is well organized, providing information on who should file for bankruptcy and the steps to do so. It also provides handy information broken down by state: such as what is exempt from a bankruptcy. While I don't believe this book can substitute for an attorney, I think it will answer most questions that will arise in the process of deciding to and organizing a bankruptcy.
